About the ISA Surf Level 1 Course

This certification sits within the ISA Coaching and Instructing Program (CIP) which develops the skills knowledge and abilities required to coach surfing through a scientific evidence based approach. The Surf Level 1 is the most popular ISA course worldwide with the broadest international appeal and the widest industry recognition.

The two day programme combines theoretical classroom sessions with practical in water assessments. Candidates learn how to structure a beginner lesson manage risk in the surf zone read ocean conditions and progress a learner through the early stages of skill development.

The Pathway Explained

The ISA Surf Level 1 Certification Pathway requires every new instructor to complete the ISA Introduction to Surf Instructing E-Learning Course before attending the in person course. This requirement has been in effect since 15 September 2024.

Dr Roxy Davis is a doctoral qualified surf therapy specialist surf coach and the founder of a multi venture surf education ecosystem in Cape Town. With over thirty years of competitive and professional surf experience and the founder of one of the largest surf schools in Africa Roxy delivers ISA courses in South Africa and trains the next generation of surf instructors, para surf coaches and surf therapists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be an advanced surfer to take this course?
You need to be a competent surfer with foundational water skills. The course assesses your ability to coach beginners not your performance surfing.

Is the e-learning course included in the R6 000 fee?
No. The e-learning module is paid separately to the ISA at $50 USD using the discount voucher provided on registration.

What happens if the weather is poor on the course dates?
The theoretical components run rain or shine. Practical sessions are adjusted around tide and wind windows over the two days.

Will I receive a certificate on completion?
Yes. Successful candidates receive an ISA Surf Level 1 Instructor Certificate issued by the International Surfing Association after completion of the ISA requirements including 20 logged training hours and a valid water safety certification.

Can international candidates attend?
Yes. Kommetjie is a forty minute drive from Cape Town International Airport. Accommodation and transport details can be arranged on request.
